Additional Advocacy Captains have been selected by SHRM’s Government Affairs staff in support of the Advocacy Team—or “A-Team”—SHRM’s new member advocacy initiative. Maine’s Advocacy Captains were recently selected, while those for the states of Arkansas, Wisconsin and Washington are expected to be announced later this week.
Under the program, Advocacy Captains serve as key contacts who have committed to build personal relationships with federal legislators at the local level—in their home districts, rather than in Washington, D.C. In Maine, SHRM members Jackie Little, Susan Norton, Bill Saufley and Richelle Wallace were recently designated Advocacy Captains for the state’s congressional delegation.
Earlier this year, Alabama became the first state with Captains designated, followed by Rhode Island. Alabama, Maine and Rhode Island A-Teams are now recruiting “HR Advocates,” who will complement the work of each Advocacy Captain at the local level. Additional Advocacy Captain-candidates are still needed for California, Florida and New York. SHRM anticipates the initial selection of Advocacy Captains for Arkansas, California, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, New York, Washington and Wisconsin to be announced early in June.

A-Team Special Events Calendar Released
Several unique opportunities to encourage widespread member participation in the A-Team initiative have just been announced.
A series of webcasts have been scheduled to foster SHRM members in becoming more involved in the Society’s public policy efforts. These sessions, usually presented live on the third Thursday of each month, will be recorded to allow those unable to attend the ‘live’ version of the webcast to review the session at another time. The introductory webcast, titled “Building Long-Term Legislative Relationships,” was held on May 12. A second session: “Mastering Town Hall Meetings,” took place on May 19. Future dates of upcoming webcasts (topics to be determined at a later time) appear below:
