Earlier this week, Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama (pictured below with SHRM President and CEO Hank Jackson), announced plans for a White House Summit on Working Families to be held in the spring of 2014. Billed as an opportunity to “elevate the national conversation around making today’s workplace work,” workplace flexibility, a priority issue for SHRM, will likely be a significant area of focus at the summit.
The administration also noted that in preparation for the event, the White House Council on Women and Girls will hold discussions with working families, employers, business and labor leaders, economists, and advocates to seek out new ideas for encouraging more family-friendly workplaces, and improving and strengthening businesses and our economy as a whole. As a leader on these important issues, SHRM will ensure the voice of the HR profession is included in these discussions.
Given the power of the presidential bully pulpit, SHRM welcomed this Summit announcement as an opportunity to showcase the innovative flexible work options many employers have adopted voluntarily. SHRM continues to be front and center as part of these ongoing national conversations on workplace flexibility with the White House, the U.S. Congress and other public policy stakeholders. SHRM and the Families and Work Institute, through our joint project When Work Works, are uncovering effective and flexible workplace strategies and look forward to sharing these promising practices with the Obama Administration. Stay tuned for more information on the summit!
