SHRM supports voluntarily paid leave programs and policies that assist employees in balancing the demands of work and family life. Furthermore, SHRM believes the federal and state governments should support employer efforts to provide paid leave by encouraging employers to devise plans tailored to meet the needs of their employees, but should do so without creating unnecessary administrative requirements or establishing mandated wage replacement programs.
SHRM believes that employers who voluntarily offer paid leave more readily assist employees with balancing work and family life. Therefore, SHRM supports government incentives, such as tax credits or programs designed to encourage employee participation in savings plans that may be used to pay for employer-approved leave.
SHRM Launches Comprehensive Effort on Workplace Flexibility
In a letter to all U.S. Senators and Representatives, SHRM President and CEO Laurence O'Neil announced on May 7, 2009, that the Society is committed to leading all stakeholders in the debate over the 21st Century workplace flexibility policy that meets the needs of both employees and employers. "We believe employers should be encouraged to provide the paid leave thier workforces need, and let employees decide how to use it."
