In 1948, a group of 28 professionals dedicated to the advancement of the personnel profession formed the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA), now known as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Those 28 professionals were SHRM's first volunteers. SHRM's volunteer leaders are critical to the organization's success and to the overall advancement of the human resource profession.
You can volunteer in a chapter, a state council, a special expertise panel, or on the SHRM Board of Directors, the HR Certification Institute Board of Directors, the SHRM Foundation Board of Directors, and others. Typically, volunteers start at the chapter level. Volunteers on various national-level Boards of Directors have been involved as volunteers at the chapter and state level prior to their appointment to national positions. How Do I Serve?
If you are interested in volunteering, you could begin by getting involved with your local SHRM chapter. Since there are over 575 local chapters, chances are that there is one near you.
