Dear SHRM Friends:
This week is National Volunteer Week. On behalf of the SHRM team, I want to take a moment to thank you for your contributions to our Society, the HR profession and your community.
It’s been said that volunteering—not voting in elections—is the ultimate expression of democracy. When you think about it, it’s easy to see why. After all, most of us vote in elections on a two-year cycle. But when you volunteer, you vote every day. Every day, as volunteers, you vote on the kind of community you want to live and work in.
Whether you are leading your chapter or state council, working at conferences, serving on panels, or joining our advocacy team, your dedication and leadership are having a dramatic impact on SHRM, the HR profession and the organizations in which we work. Add to that your efforts on behalf of veterans, students, and displaced workers—teaching them interviewing skills and polishing their résumés. It’s an incredible contribution!
Somehow you make the time. You do it because you want to be a part of something bigger. You want to make a difference. The SHRM team greatly appreciates your commitment.
All of us have two choices in life—to dissolve into the mainstream, or to stand out from the crowd. For the latter choice, you must be different, and strive to be what no one else but you can be.
Thank you for making that choice on behalf of your profession!
