A new online toolkit is available to help employers recruit and hire veterans, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced Oct. 28, 2010.
The Veterans Hiring Toolkit is part of the DOL’s “America’s Heroes at Work” initiative and covers:
- Designing a strategy for a veteran-hiring initiative.
- Creating an educated and welcoming environment for veterans transitioning to the civilian workplace.
- Actively recruiting veterans and military spouses.
- Learning how to accommodate qualified veterans and wounded veterans into the workplace.
- Promoting an inclusive workplace to retain veterans.
- Tools and resources, including links to veterans’ employment service organizations, places to receive consultations on workplace accommodations and answers to common employer questions.
“Many employers have told us that they are interested in developing or enhancing a veterans hiring initiative for their company, but that they don’t know where to begin,” said Ray Jefferson, assistant secretary for the DOL’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, in a statement about the new resource.
“This toolkit was created with these employers in mind,” he said. “It’s designed to simplify the process and put valuable, vetted resources at the employer’s fingertips.”
The toolkit’s launch is timely, given that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, noted Kathleen Martinez, assistant secretary for the DOL’s Office of Disability Employment Policy.
“Disabled veterans, including those experiencing the ‘invisible’ wounds of war like traumatic brain injury and combat stress, are an important segment of the disability population that needs our support when transitioning to civilian employment,” she said in a news release.
