Howard Winkler, SPHR, Director Howard Winkler is Project Manager in the Office of the General Counsel for Atlanta-based Southern Company. Howard is responsible for developing Ethics strategy, communications, and training. Prior to his current assignment, Howard was Human Resources Strategy Director, where he managed workforce planning, human capital metrics, and the alignment of workforce strategy with business strategy. Previously, Howard had responsibility for recruiting and staffing for Southern. During his thirty years in Human Resources, Howard has served in numerous HR roles in Labor Relations, Generalist, and OD positions, and with HR information systems. Howard’s chief interests in Human Resources involve ethics, innovation and integration. He has led initiatives in diversity, substance abuse programming, union organizing, and downsizing. Outside of Southern, he has spoken before the Conference Board, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and numerous industry organizations. He is a contributor to several journals and has been quoted in The Economist and Fortune. Certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the HR Certification Institute (HRCI), Howard has served on its board of directors and as Board Chair. He also has served as co-chair of the Electric Utility HR Benchmarking Group, the steering committee of the HR Strategic Issues Council and the editorial board of Shared Services News. Howard holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia and a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. He is a Board member of Trout Unlimited, an honorary Colonel in the Georgia militia, and the father of four daughters.
