Mary Gowan, Director


Mary Gowan is a professor of management and the former dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business at Elon University.  During her tenure as dean, the school’s endowment doubled, the part-time MBA program was ranked #1 in the nation, and the undergraduate program was ranked #60 in its first time being ranked.  She has extensive consulting experience with private and public organizations in the areas of leadership, human resource management and organizational development.  Her research focuses on corporate reputation and career transitions and has been published in leading management journals such as the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Applied Psychology.  She is the co-author of Human Resource Management: Managing Employees for Competitive Advantage. In addition to being a member of the Board of Directors for the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, she is a member of the Board of Directors for the Institute for Sustainable Development, a national organization based in Chapel Hill North Carolina, which assists small and medium size businesses with focusing on the triple-bottom line.  She is also a past board member for the Christian Service Center of Central Florida and the Alamance Area Chamber of Commerce.  She has a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Georgia. Prior to joining Elon, she was the associate dean for undergraduate programs at the George Washington University. Dr. Gowan has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Maryland and the Helsinki School of Economics and Business in Finland and in Korea, and on the faculty of UCF, UNC Charlotte, and UT El Paso.  She has been the SHRM student chapter advisor at UT El Paso, UNC Charlotte, UCF, and George Washington University.
