The Science and Practice of Executive Coaching: Development of a process-based model and measurement toolkit of executive coaching effectiveness

Funded: December 2012     Expected Completion: January 2015

Eduardo Salas, Ph.D., University of South Florida, Institute for Simuation and Training

Abstract
Executive coaching to date suffers from inconsistency in theory as well as measurement techniques. We propose to add to the literature by identifying these variables (through literature review, SME interviews, and experimental methods). Executive coaching and HR practitioners will benefit from the development of a theoretical model of coaching effectiveness; this will help coaches be more effective, and organizations have a better understanding of a given coach’s methodology and effectiveness track record. Correlational surveys and lab and field experimental designs, coupled with multiple regression analyses will allow us to test the inputs, mediators, and moderators that drive coaching effectiveness.
