Achal Khanna has been named CEO of SHRM India, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announced May 13, 2013.

Khanna joined SHRM India in May 2011 as chief operating officer and has been interim CEO for SHRM’s India operations since January 2013.

“In her interim capacity, she has proven to be a capable leader with a vision for SHRM in India,” said Henry G. “Hank” Jackson, SHRM president and CEO, in a news release. “She brings to the CEO position a strong commitment to the HR community.”

That vision, Khanna told SHRM Online, is “to develop a strong presence for SHRM in India as a thought leader in the HR space and to build a self-sustaining and reliable business” that “is aligned to SHRM global objectives and is the largest SHRM operation, with the highest membership count” outside the U.S.

She also addressed what she sees as the challenge to the HR community in India: incorporating the best global HR practices to leverage India’s critical and large HR population in an effort to achieve a sustained high gross domestic product and meet development objectives.

SHRM India plans to overcome these challenges, Khanna said, by using its global knowledge, expertise and skills to support the HR community “and to build partnerships with the government, industry, academia and the HR professionals.”

Khanna has more than three decades of experience in senior managerial positions, serving at global companies such as DuPont, Polaroid, General Electric and Kelly Services. In 1998 the International Management Institute of India named her Best Woman Executive in India.

She has an undergraduate degree in economics and a master’s in English literature.

SHRM India, a wholly owned subsidiary of SHRM, aims to advance the profession and serve the HR professional in India.
