SHRM Supports AARP Competition

ATLANTA--The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announced June 26 at its 2012 Annual Conference that it will co-sponsor AARP’s 2013 Best Employers for Workers Over 50 awards, with the 50 winners honored during the SHRM 2013 Annual Conference & Exposition in Chicago.

The biennial award recognizes companies and other organizations that value experienced talent and implement policies and practices that meet the needs of a mature workforce. Applicants must be headquartered in the United States and have at least 50 full-time employees in the U.S. and its territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Applicants are judged in the categories of recruitment, career development, flexible work arrangements, benefits and retiree relations. A panel of nationally recognized judges reviews the applications and provides feedback on the applicants.

The announcement of SHRM’s co-sponsorship was made by SHRM President and CEO Henry G. “Hank” Jackson and AARP CEO A. Barry Rand. SHRM entered into a partnership with AARP in 2010 with the goal of increasing awareness of issues facing older workers and providing strategies and resources to address those issues. AARP is the world’s largest association for people ages 50 and older.

“We are delighted that SHRM will be joining us as we move forward with an important program that both identifies innovative employers and serves as a model for others seeking to better meet the needs of experienced workers,” Rand said. “SHRM and its members have a unique perspective on employer policies around the country, a perspective that will help better pinpoint forward-looking practices,” he added.

“Every organization needs to view its older workers as highly valuable assets and develop strategies to keep this enormous wealth of talent,” Jackson said. “It’s absolutely critical for organizations to embrace new ways to retain older workers, especially in the face of the coming wave of Boomer retirements.”

The application period for the 2013 Best Employers awards will be open until Nov. 12, 2012. Participation in the process is confidential. Detailed information and an application are available at www.aarp.org/bestemployers.

SHRM and AARP said that each applicant for the award will be provided with a detailed benchmarking analysis that describes how it scored relative to other applicants. The analysis is intended to help organizations evaluate their HR policies and practices more effectively.

The awards were first given out by AARP in 2002. In 2008, a separate set of awards was added for the best international employers. The winning Best Employers for Workers Over 50 organizations in 2013 will be recognized in SHRM’s HR Magazine and in AARP The Magazine and AARP Bulletin.
