2 New HR Standards Up for Public Comment

Two drafts of proposed HR standards for the United States—one covering Investor Metrics, the other addressing Workforce Planning—are posted for their second public reviews, the Society for Human Resource Management announced.

The second public review period of the Investor Metrics draft standard ends Nov. 19, 2012. This series of metrics intends to show the value of human capital in a manner that would be compelling to investors in publicly traded companies, according to Lee S. Webster, SHRM’s HR standards director.

The second public review period for the Workforce Planning draft standard ends Nov. 30, 2012.

It provides guidelines for processes, data, metrics and governance that HR professionals may use to develop workforce planning capabilities in their organizations, Webster said. 

Once standards have passed through public review and been adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), they will be available for free download on the SHRM website, with a fee for printed copies.

These two draft standards are the latest among a group of standards being created by task forces that SHRM is overseeing under the auspices of ANSI. In 2009, ANSI designated SHRM as the official body to develop national-level operating standards in 12 HR function areas.

ANSI approved the Cost-per-Hire Standard earlier in 2012 and the ASIS/SHRM Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention Standard in late 2011.

Membership on the task forces is not limited to SHRM members or HR practitioners, and while the standards being created are U.S.-centric, membership on the task forces is not limited to U.S.-based parties.

Webster has noted in previous SHRM Online news reports that the standards provide consistent methodologies and a common approach that HR professionals can voluntarily adopt. Businesses are not required to follow these standards.

He pointed out, also, that HR standards differ from HR certifications; standards are business tools, whereas HR certifications are designations of an individual’s competency of HR knowledge areas.
