Human Resource Organizations in Five States Win Awards for Innovative HR Programs
SHRM affiliates in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, and Washington win SHRM’s Pinnacle Award
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Nine human resource organizations from across the country today won the Pinnacle Award, given by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to its affiliates who developed the most pioneering workforce programs.
Created in 1991, the award is the highest achievement SHRM state councils and chapters can attain, and it honors programs that exceed the standard activities of SHRM affiliates in enhancing the creation of effective HR management.
“The Pinnacle Award winners represent the most outstanding of innovative programs HR professionals create and implement regularly around the country for their organizations,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, the president and CEO of SHRM. “This year’s winners offer solutions to some of the most critical business issues, such as the skills gap, preparing young workers for the workplace, and helping military veterans transition to the civilian workforce.”
Winning programs were selected from 65 applications and received a $1,000 prize, sponsored by ADP Inc. SHRM presented the awards at its Leadership Conference held in National Harbor, MD.
The nine 2012 SHRM Pinnacle Award winners are:
1. HR Florida State Council, Inc. ─ “Where the Conversation Begins: Meeting the Unique Needs of the HR Executive”
2. Mississippi SHRM State Council ─ “Skillz Drillz”
3. Central Savannah River Area SHRM ─ “A Partnership with a Passion: CSRA SHRM and Augusta Judicial Circuit Drug Court”
4. Human Resource Management Association of Southwest Florida ─ “Tutoring And Removing Gaps in Education for Tomorrow (TARGET)”
5. Michiana SHRM ─ “Investing in our Military and Armed Forces”
6. SHRM-Atlanta ─ “SHRM-Atlanta’s Workforce Readiness Community Service”
7. South Central Indiana Human Resource Association ─ “SCIHRA Intern Institute”

Brief descriptions of the winning programs are below.
2012 PINNACLE AWARD WINNER PROFILES
HR Florida State Council, Inc. ─ “Where the Conversation Begins: Meeting the Unique Needs of the HR Executive”
Based on the growing needs of high-level business executives in Florida, the HR Florida State Council partnered with HR executives at businesses to create the HR Florida Executive Leadership Summit – “Where the Conversation Begins.” The event offered 75 executives from 50 of Florida’s biggest employers an opportunity to learn about emerging issues from thought leaders, to network with other executives, and to develop solutions and best practices to business issues in workshops with their peers.
Mississippi SHRM State Council ─ “Skillz Drillz”
Volunteer business and HR professionals and educators from each school district and representatives from the Mississippi National Guard participated in the “Skillz Drillz” program, a boot camp for area sixth graders to teach them workplace skills, such as how to find a job, traits of a successful career citizen, and how to behave in the workplace. Children began learning skills they would need as young job seekers and professionals in a fun boot camp format.
Central Savannah River Area SHRM ─ “A Partnership with a Passion: CSRA SHRM and Augusta Judicial Circuit Drug Court”
Partnered with the Augusta Judicial Circuit Drug Court, the chapter created a two year program with five phases to help local drug addicts and those in recovery prepare to find jobs. The program offered training on important workplace issues, like networking, dressing for the workplace, resume writing and job search and interview skills. A second goal of the program was to form a mentorship system with HR professionals in the chapter and program participants.
Human Resource Management Association of Southwest Florida ─ “Tutoring And Removing Gaps in Education for Tomorrow (TARGET)”
The program raised money from area chapter members and businesses to fund help for local homeless children to get tutored for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, which is required for high school graduation. Helping raise funds to prepare students for the test is a way of preparing the future workforce for their careers after they leave school.
Michiana SHRM ─ “Investing in our Military and Armed Forces”
The chapter recruited partner organizations to plan and advertise the first annual Michiana Military Job Fair, specifically organized to help unemployed military veterans find jobs. The event both helped military find new jobs and raised awareness of the high unemployment rate for veterans. More than 50 employers had space at the job fair.
SHRM-Atlanta ─ “SHRM-Atlanta’s Workforce Readiness Community Service”
More than 325 volunteers volunteered 1100 hours to support the chapter’s multi-pronged workforce readiness initiative, which was composed of assisting partners with their programs, such as delivering programs on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and global workforce readiness through the Junior Achievement of Georgia. As part of this program, volunteers also helped with a high school business certification review, 21st Century Leaders, Year-UP, the DeKalb County Youth program and the Atlanta Mayor’s Youth Program.
South Central Indiana Human Resource Association ─ “SCIHRA Intern Institute”
Vetted employers worked with the chapter to provide a unique internship opportunity to college students interested in human resources. Through the Intern Institute, students got to work for four employers, instead of just one, had a chapter sponsor who ensured the student was enjoying the internship, work within the chapter itself, and were assigned a project to help better their understanding of HR.
Space Coast Chapter ─ “The Tonya Thomas Story”
Inspired by the story of a local HR professional who was murdered, the chapter organized an employee assistance program to help industry specific employees – those in HR, who are frequently the ones who help everyone else. The employee assistance program is available to help all HR professionals in Florida.
Yakima Valley Human Resource Association ─ “100 Jobs for 100 Kids”
Working with partner organizations, the chapter planned a job fair and workshop for more than 300 local youths. Over 100 youths found paid summer internships through the job fair. The accompanying workshop taught them job seeing skills and training and certifications for food handling jobs.
