ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 17, 2012 — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest HR association, announced today that six human resource and business executives have been elected to its Board of Directors for 2013.
The 2013 SHRM Board of Directors will be chaired by Bette J. Francis, SPHR, vice president/director of human resources for Wilmington Trust Wealth Advisory Services in Wilmington, Del. A SHRM member since 1990 and a board member since 2007, Francis will replace current chair Jose A. Berrios in January. Berrios will serve as immediate past chair in 2013, after completing his two-year term as chair.
A 13-member Board of Directors sets broad policies and strategic direction and provides fiduciary oversight for the 260,000-member SHRM.
Elected as at-large members to the Board of Directors by SHRM members were:
- Jorge Consuegra, partner at the communications agency The Fearless Group (two-year term);
- My-Chau Nguyen, CPA, senior vice president of customer relationship marketing for Sirius XM Radio (two-year term);
- Coretha M. Rushing, GPHR, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, Equifax Inc. (three-year term);
- Brian D. Silva, SPHR, GPHR, senior vice president of human resources and administration, Fresenius Medical Care (three-year term);
- José Tomas, SPHR, president of Latin America and Caribbean and global chief people officer, Burger King Corp. (three-year term);
- David Windley, former chief human resources officer at Yahoo! (one-year term).
“We welcome this group of six accomplished HR professionals and business leaders to the SHRM Board. Their experiences reflect the diverse business backgrounds needed to guide an association of SHRM’s size and scope in 2013 and beyond,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, president and CEO of SHRM. Jackson is an ex officio voting member of the board.
Five of the directors were re-elected to the board. Windley joins the board for the first time. Their terms begin Jan. 1, 2013.
Also on the board but not requiring election for 2013 are Jeffrey M. Cava; James A. Kaitz; Gary P. Latham, Ph.D.; and Virda M. Rhem, SPHR.
The election was overseen by Election Services Corp. and included three SHRM members serving as inspectors of voting.
Bette J. Francis
, SPHR, is vice president/director of human resources at Wilmington Trust Wealth Advisory Services in Wilmington, Del. A human resource professional with 25 years of experience, Francis has designed HR services in medical device manufacturing, in a rapidly expanding health care management consulting organization and in a telecommunications organization. In addition to senior HR roles, Francis has held executive leadership roles, including in technical services, compliance and ethics. An active SHRM member since 1990, she has held leadership positions in the North Jersey-Rockland Chapter and was executive director of the Garden State Council of SHRM. Francis served two years on SHRM’s Human Capital Measurement Special Expertise Panel. Before her appointment as a director-at-large on the 2007 SHRM Board, Francis served as the northeast region representative on SHRM’s Membership Advisory Council. Francis has held adjunct faculty positions at Bergen Community College and New York University’s Marketing and Management Institute. She is a graduate of Thomas Edison College.
is a global business and marketing professional with almost 25 years of experience with Fortune 500 companies. He is currently a partner at The Fearless Group, a full-service communications agency, where he focuses on the multicultural market. Before joining Fearless, he was chief marketing officer for Forbes Media. As senior vice president at Western Union, he led the U.S. product management team and the person-to-person transfer business within the United States. At Yahoo! Inc., he served in several global leadership roles, including vice president of international marketing. Earlier in his career, he was director of marketing for Pepsi Cola International and senior marketing manager, brand Pepsi for Pepsi North America. Born in Havana, Cuba, Consuegra earned his bachelor’s degree in international relations from Tufts University and a master’s of business administration from Harvard University.
, CPA, is senior vice president of customer relationship marketing for Sirius XM Radio. In this role, she leads the customer relationship management strategy for the organization’s 20 million subscribers. Prior to Sirius XM Radio, Nguyen spent several years with Sprint Nextel, where she served as vice president of marketing excellence. In that role, she was integration officer and chief of staff to the chief marketing officer. Earlier in her career, Nguyen held senior leadership roles with Nextel, Earthlink, AOL, Cable & Wireless USA and Sprint. She is a founding member of the Global Account Benchmarking Forum with colleagues from IBM, Xerox, Reuters and Dun & Bradstreet. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The American University and a certificate of business leadership from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.
Coretha M. Rushing
, GPHR, senior vice president of Equifax Inc., has been chief human resources officer since 2006. She also serves as a member of the Equifax Foundation Board. She served on the Board of Directors of SHRM Atlanta, one of SHRM’s largest chapters. Prior to working at Equifax, she served in several senior HR functions for The Coca-Cola Co. She also has been an executive coach and human resource consultant, and she held several HR management positions with Pizza Hut and IBM Corp. Rushing began her career as a recruiter and corporate training specialist with R.H. Macy’s & Co., and as the training director for East River Savings and Loan. Rushing holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology from East Carolina University and a master's degree in human resources and counseling from The George Washington University.
Brian D. Silva
, SPHR, GPHR, is senior vice president of human resources and administration for Fresenius Medical Care, the global leader in kidney care. Before joining Fresenius, he was senior vice president of HR at Gentiva Health Services. Before Gentiva Health Services, Silva served as senior vice president of HR and administration and was corporate secretary for Linens N Things. Previously, he held HR positions with Allstate Insurance and Guardian Insurance. He has served on the Board of Directors for 24/7 Real Media, and as an instructor in the New York Institute of Technology’s Graduate School of Management. Silva holds a master’s degree in organization psychology from Columbia University and a master’s degree in HR management from the New York Institute of Technology. He earned his undergraduate degree at St. John’s University.
, SPHR, is president of Latin America and Caribbean and global chief people officer for Burger King Corp. Tomas previously was vice president of human resources for Burger King and earlier led the HR teams for the company’s global restaurant support center in Miami and the Latin America and Caribbean region. Prior to joining Burger King, he held field and corporate human resource positions with Ryder System Inc., including director of talent acquisition and director of corporate human resources. After transitioning from operations, Tomas began his HR career as an HR specialist with Publix Super Markets. He later managed the associate relations team for Publix’s southeast division. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s of science in management from Florida International University.
, a human resource professional for more than 25 years, most recently was chief human resources officer at Yahoo! Inc. Before becoming CHRO, he was vice president of human resources. Prior to joining Yahoo!, he was general manager of HR in the COO Group at Microsoft, where he also had responsibilities for leading international HR. While vice president of HR at Intuit Inc., Windley led the HR team for all its business units. He worked for 10 years at Silicon Graphics, most recently as vice president of HR. Earlier in his career, he worked in HR management positions in the construction/engineering, insurance, and entertainment/software industries. He holds a master’s of business administration degree from San Francisco State University and a bachelor’s of science degree from San Diego State University.
