Pick Your Pony: Most Employers Don’t Have Policies on Office Pools at Work, SHRM Poll Shows ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Pull out the fancy hats and make mint juleps. Most employers do not have policies regulating office pools, according to a new poll from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
Just in time for the upcoming Kentucky Derby and other Triple Crown races, SHRM’s poll, released today, found that 81 percent of surveyed organizations do not have written or unwritten policies about office pools in the workplace, an increase from 67 percent in 2010.
In addition, HR professionals see office pools having a positive impact on their workplaces. More than two-thirds (70 percent) noted a positive impact on relationship building, 64 percent mentioned promoting team building, and 54 percent said they increase employee engagement.
The poll − “The Use of Office Pools in the Workplace” − also discovered that most employers with policies use them to prohibit gambling in which money changes hands (70 percent), to notify employees of disciplinary action if they do not comply with the policy (69 percent) and to disallow any form of gambling at work (66 percent). Of those organizations with written or unwritten policies, only 7 percent have disciplined employees for not complying with their policies.
Other key findings include:
- The percentage of employers with a written policy addressing office pools remained the same in 2013 and 2010 – 10 percent. The number with an unwritten policy decreased from 23 percent in 2010 to 8 percent in 2013.
- More HR professionals indicated that male employees (16 percent of respondents) are absent from work the day after the Super Bowl than female employees (7 percent of respondents).
- The top two events for which employees conducted office pools in 2013 were the Super Bowl (39 percent) and the NCAA college basketball tournament (36 percent).
