Experts to Speak on ACA, Background Checks, State Law Trends and More at Employment Law & Legislative Conference March 17-19 in Washington

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) 2014 Employment Law & Legislative Conference will enable attendees to learn more about complex workplace legislation and the latest regulatory activities from those who implement federal employment laws.

Conference sessions will have a strong focus on timely topics such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), background checks in the hiring process, and state trends related to employment law. Attendees also will also learn how to spot and address common problems that can put organizations at risk. More than 500 human resource professionals are expected to attend the conference sessions on workplace law and HR public policy issues.

  • Health Care Reform Strategies for 2014; Presenter: Penny Wofford, shareholder, Ogltree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C, Greenville, S.C.; Summary: This session will discuss the employer shared responsibility under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which has been delayed until 2015, and will also discuss the steps companies can take in 2014 to be best positioned for 2015 and what is ahead.
  • Now the Real Work Begins: Positioning Your Organization for Health Care Reform; Presenter: Gary B. Kushner, SPHR, CBP, president and CEO, Kushner & Company, Portage, Mich.; Summary: This session will discuss new requirements to help companies not only stay in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, but determine the right strategies to achieve HR objectives.

Background Checks

  • Background Checks – Criminal, Credit and Social Media; Presenter: Michael Cohen, partner, Duane Morris, LLP, Philadelphia; Summary: In this session, attendees will explore the use of background checks in the hiring process with a focus on how to ensure the check is legal and in compliance with EEOC guidelines.

State Law Trends

  • All Politics is Local: State Law Trends; Presenter: Jonathan Segal, partner, Duane Morris, LLP, Philadelphia; Summary: Attendees will review state and local employment laws from an HR perspective and receive recommendations to increase effectiveness in terms of grassroots advocacy. This session focuses on state law trends, including bills that would make additional states right-to-work states, restrict employers’ rights to access social media sites, allow employees to bring weapons onto the premises of their employer, limit the right of employers to conduct credit and criminal background checks, expand the groups protected against discrimination, and provide paid and unpaid leave.
