Alexander Alonso Named SHRM’s Vice President of Research 

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today announced that Alexander Alonso, Ph.D., SPHR has been promoted from director of thought leadership to vice president of research.

In his new position, Alonso will be responsible for leading SHRM’s comprehensive research program and the new SHRM Competency Model. He is filling the position previously held by Mark Schmit, the new executive director of the SHRM Foundation. The position reports to Deb Cohen, senior vice president for knowledge development. Alonso will assume his new role on November 19.

“Alex’s expertise and background will help him to support and strengthen the research department,” said Deb Cohen, senior vice president of knowledge development. “Alex has done tremendous work in developing and validating the most comprehensive competency model for the HR profession that has ever existed. With his leadership and collegiality Alex is well-positioned to meet the needs of our members and the profession.”

“I look forward to this opportunity to lead SHRM’s team of excellent researchers,” said Alonso. “In addition, I will be looking for our team to provide thought leadership around some of the major employment and workforce issues facing our members and the HR profession today.”

Alonso joined SHRM in 2011 and has more than 15 years of experience in research and the HR field. Prior to working at SHRM, he was a senior research scientist with the American Institutes for Research. He earned a doctorate degree in organizational psychology from Florida International University.
