Elissa O’Brien named SHRM Vice President for Membership

CHICAGO, June 14, 2013 — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has appointed Elissa C. O’Brien, SPHR, as its vice president for membership.

A human resource executive with more than 20 years of experience, O’Brien has been an active volunteer for SHRM, including serving on the SHRM Special Expertise Panel on Labor Relations. She also has served as state director for the Rhode Island State Council and president of the Human Resources Management Association of Rhode Island.

Her appointment was effective today, Friday, June 14.

“Serving our members is SHRM’s top priority, and we welcome Elissa O’Brien to the important role of engaging our more than 260,000 members around the world,” said J. Robert Carr, SHRM’s senior vice president for membership, marketing and external affairs. “Her years as a volunteer leader and depth of experience as an HR leader will certainly serve our members well.”

Before joining SHRM, O’Brien was senior vice president of human resources and training at WinnResidential in Boston. She earlier served as director of corporate HR services for Steward Health Care in Boston and as vice president of human resources for Wingate Healthcare in Needham, Mass.

“I am looking forward to my new position with SHRM and engaging all our members on critical issues that directly impact our profession and the organizations they serve,” O’Brien said. “I especially look forward to building relationships and partnerships that increase our profession's influence, sustainability, and voice on human-capital challenges facing businesses today and in the future.”

O’Brien has been an adjunct instructor of human resource management at Bryant University in Rhode Island. She holds a master’s of science degree in managerial technology from Johnson and Wales University in Providence and a bachelor’s of science degree in human resource management from Salve Regina University in Newport.
