SHRM-Globoforce Survey: Crowdsourcing Can Fix Annual Performance Reviews 

Alexandria, Va. – May 29, 2013 – Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of HR professionals think crowdsourcing recognition data would provide a more accurate picture of employee performance.

Less than one-half of HR professionals say annual performance reviews effectively appraise performance and even fewer say employees are being rewarded for performance.

The findings are detailed in a joint survey from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and Globoforce, a leading provider of social recognition solutions—the SHRM-Globoforce Employee Recognition Programs Survey, Spring 2013.

The responses also show that roughly eight in 10, or 78 percent, of HR professionals think crowdsourcing would help the employee performance review process.

 The SHRM-Globoforce survey shows that:

  • 64 percent of HR professionals say employees are rewarded according to their job performance while 36 percent say they are not;
  • 53 percent say annual performance reviews are an accurate appraisal for employees’ work while 47 percent report they are not; and
  • 49 percent of HR professionals say managers and supervisors effectively acknowledge and appreciate employees’ performance while 51 percent find such is not the case.

“The data signify opportunities for improvements in performance management and recognition particularly as drivers of employee engagement,” said Alexander Alonso, vice president of research, SHRM.

The survey identifies 10 factors that impact employee engagement.

The survey shows that 71 percent of HR professionals say appreciation by an employee’s direct supervisor has the greatest impact on employee engagement. Roughly four in 10—41 percent—report opportunity to advance has the most impact on employee engagement while 36 percent report salary and bonus have the most impact.

“This survey supports what we have always believed; that performance reviews would be more effective if they were ongoing and consistent, with feedback from peers in addition to managers,” said Eric Mosley, CEO of Globoforce.” “Crowdsourcing feedback and recognition can fundamentally change the way employees are managed and measured and even inspire improved performance.”

More than one-third (35 percent) of HR professionals cite the ability to be effective in one’s job as a key driver of employee engagement. Another 30 percent note the company’s care for employees’ well-being. Twenty-nine percent report employee confidence in executive leadership is key in employee engagement.

At the bottom of the list is relationship with peers say 22 percent of surveyed HR professionals followed by belief in the company’s mission (18 percent). Only four percent of HR professionals think an employee’s job title impacts employee engagement.

The bigger picture:

  • Employee engagement is the most important HR challenge facing their organization say 47 percent of HR professional responding to the survey;
  • Succession planning ranked second according to 39 percent of HR professionals; and
  • Culture management ranked third with 35 percent of HR professionals responding.

SHRM surveyed 803 HR professionals from its membership, employed in organizations the title of manager or above and 500 or more employees.
