SHRM’s LINE Report Predicts Steady but Unspectacular Hiring

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — About four in 10 manufacturers and service-sector companies will hire in September, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) said today in its Leading Indicators of National Employment® (LINE) Report.

The SHRM LINE Report, based on a survey of human resource professionals, predicts employment activity for the coming month, about 30 days before statistics on employment are available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“The employment expectations index indicates that while jobs are being added, the pace is not at a high level,” said Jennifer Schramm, manager of workplace trends and forecasting at SHRM.

The hiring rate will increase in the service sector in September compared with a year ago — the 14th consecutive month of increases. In the sector, 46.9 percent of HR professionals said their company plans to hire workers, while 7.5 percent will cut jobs — leaving a positive net of 39.4 percent, a four-year high.

Hiring will decline slightly in the manufacturing sector in September, the report found.

“These steady but unspectacular employment expectations are currently not at a level that pushes recruiting difficulty up significantly,” Schramm said. “Recruiting difficulty was pretty much unchanged in both sectors in August.”

The LINE Report provides a human resource snapshot of month-ahead hiring expectations and examines new-hire compensation, difficulty in recruiting top-level talent and job vacancies. Respondents include HR professionals from 500 private service-sector companies and 500 manufacturing companies, which together employ more than 90 percent of U.S. private-sector workers.

The report showed that most organizations were still keeping new-hire compensation rates flat.

“Findings on new-hire compensation also were mixed in August with the rate of increase in new-hire compensation falling in manufacturing and rising slightly in services compared with a year ago,” Schramm said.

The report showed that in the manufacturing sector, a net total of 6.1 percent of respondents reported increasing new-hire compensation in August, down 1.7 points from August 2012. In the service sector, a net total of 14.8 percent of companies increased new-hire compensation in August, representing a 6.7-point increase from a year ago.
