2012 Employment Law & Legislative Conference

November Elections/Workplace Public Policy Issues the Focus of Washington Conference
SHRM’s 2012 Employment Law & Legislative Conference attracted nearly 600 HR professionals to Washington. The program reflected a balance of Democratic, Republican and non-partisan experts. Congressional Representatives Descend on SHRM’s Employment Law and Legislative Conference
SHRM and its members flexed their advocacy muscle last week during the 2012 Employment Law & Legislative Conference.  However, prior to over 200 SHRM members visiting the offices of their representatives and senators on March 7, a half-dozen members of Congress made their way to the conference to share their perspectives with SHRM attendees on a plethora of issues – ranging from employer-provided educational assistance, health care reform, the Government’s role in today’s workplaces and the monumental challenges confronting the country involving the debt, national security and the lack of ‘compromise’ on Capitol Hill. SHRM Instrumental in Introduction of Tuition Assistance Bill
On Monday, March 5, Reps. Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Richard Neal (D-MA) introduced H.R. 4137, the Employee Educational Assistance Act of 2012. SHRM, a strong proponent of this employer-provided benefit, was instrumental in garnering bipartisan support for this bill prior to its introduction – which happened to coincide with the start of the 2012 Employment Law and Legislative Conference. [ More ]

Regulatory Developments

HHS Developing On-line Tool for Employers to Support Nursing Mothers
Enacted into law as part of 2010’s health care reform initiative, employers are required to provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after the child’s birth. [ More ]

Workplace Flexibility

When Work Works Update
Three months into 2012 and the When Work Works initiative continues to pick up steam across the country. Next week, When Work Works educational programming in 2012 target states includes programs with HR Tampa, the Michigan SHRM State Council, and the Alaska SHRM State Council.  These efforts help educate HR professionals about the business case for workplace flexibility, share effective practices, and raise awareness of the Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility.
