E-Verify Developments

On March 20, 2014, the Council for Global Immigration (the Council) and SHRM jointly submitted comment on myE-Verify, a portal that will allow E-Verify users to track case status and lock their Social Security numbers.

In our comments, the two groups recommended that any employment eligibility verification system use state-of-the-art, multidimensional, dynamic technology to determine to a high degree of accuracy whether an individual presenting biographic information is the individual with that true identity.

In order for myE-Verify to provide sufficient safeguard against identity theft, the Council and SHRM noted that a “knowledge-based authentication” (KBA) component is crucial.  We further recommended that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security should ensure that contracts with any outside vendors limit the use of information obtained from myE-Verify and Self Check to that needed to complete the myE-Verify and Self-Check processes.
