   3/27/2014

2014 is an election year for the U.S. Congress. Elections for the Senate and House of Representatives will be held on November 4. In the Senate, 33 of the 100 seats are being contested, and winners will serve six-year terms from January 3, 2015, to January 3, 2021. In the House of Representatives, elections will be held for all 435 seats, and winners will serve two-year terms from January 3, 2015, to January 3, 2017.

In short, what does that mean?  By year’s end, there are likely to be a lot of new political players in Washington, D.C., and they need to know what the HR profession is all about.

Many of these new lawmakers (and even some veterans) will not come from an HR background, nor will they have a firm grasp of how pending legislative proposals will impact your workplace. That’s why we need YOU to join the SHRM Advocacy Team (A-Team).

SHRM’s Advocacy Team is a group of HR professionals committed to educating lawmakers about the work of HR and advancing the interests of the profession through legislative and regulatory channels. As a member of the SHRM Advocacy Team, you will be the voice of our profession and join the ranks of other HR Advocates committed to moving the HR profession forward. Learn more about the A-Team by visiting HERE or join the A-Team as an HR Advocate or Advocacy Captain HERE.

For more information on A-Team activities or questions about the initiative, contact Meredith Nethercutt, SHRM’s senior associate, member advocacy (703- 535- 6417/Meredith.Nethercutt@shrm.org), or Chatrane Birbal, SHRM’s senior advisor, government relations (703-535-6476/Chatrane.Birbal@shrm.org.)
