July 2014 – SWC Regional MAC Rep Update:

It was great to see and visit with the Volunteer Leaders in Orlando, FL at the 2014 SHRM Annual Conference.

The MAC met during the 2014 SHRM Annual Conference with the SHRM Board of Directors as well as the SHRM Foundation Board of Directors.  At the SHRM Board’s direction, we focused on the new SHRM Certification rather than the results of the two mini surveys conducted earlier this year.  The results of these mini surveys are tabled to the MAC Meeting with the SHRM Board during the SHRM Volunteer Leaders Summit in November.

Thank you for reaching out to me and Field Service Directors during this time of change and progression.  Your candidness on the webinars and conference calls leading up to the MAC Meeting with the Board was helpful.  The MAC captured and presented the following information in our report:

Eight focus areas

  • Member feedback
  • Certified Professionals
  • SHRM Chapters and State Councils
  • California Strategy
  • SHRM Communications
  • Approved Providers
  • SHRM/HRCI Relationship
  • Leadership

Based on the feedback provided, we offered the following recommendations:

  • SHRM needs to have a member-focused campaign which demonstrates the value of the SHRM certification. The current perception is that of a revenue-driven focus.
  • SHRM should develop communication around the Value of SHRM's Competency Model and how it substantially differentiates itself from the HRCI certification.
  • We suggest that SHRM stop using the word "transition" in communications and focus on moving the profession forward.
  • SHRM should create a focus group of SHRM Volunteer Leaders to assist SHRM in creating an effective and efficient recertification process.
  • Additionally, SHRM needs to equip the field staff to promote and further engage members about the SHRM certification at the state and chapter level.
  • Finally, we as the MAC, collectively recommend that we be given the opportunity to continue to reach out to members regarding the SHRM certification and begin laying the foundation for engagement. We want to be an instrument for change in advancing the profession and serving the professionals.

I encourage you and your team to continue forwarding questions, comments, concerns, recommendations, etc., to your SWC Region Field Services Director and myself.  Please include both of my email addresses listed below when corresponding so I can make sure I receive them:  rebecca.briley1016@gmail.com and rebeccab@efedcu.org

A special thank you goes out to Oklahoma SHRM for their hospitality and support during my visit to Tulsa for their State Council Meeting and State Conference.  Jeff Owens and his team did an amazing job!  I plan to travel to New Mexico in July to support Ilene Colina and her NM SHRM team for their State Council Meeting.

As your MAC rep, I ask each State Council Director to allow me to call in to your State Council Meetings as often as possible.  Finally, if my calendar and personal finances allow, I may be available to travel to your state to attend one of your State Council Meetings and/or conferences.

Thank you and have a safe and Happy Independence Day!
