FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) ABOUT TRANSITIONING TO A 100% CHAPTER

Q. What about the possibility of "missing out" on some outstanding local individuals?
A. Those outstanding individuals could benefit from the additional services that SHRM provides and be an even stronger contributor. Create a prospect list that will include the non-SHRM members such as these individuals.  Periodically invite them to educational events such as seminars or workshops to reinforce the value of belonging to the chapter.  As part of your pricing structure have a "guest" price that is higher than the member price.  Limit the number of times a guest can attend in a calendar year.  Through a multi-pronged apporach of value proposition, pricing structure and limited access to chapter resources you will be promoting chapter membership and, in turn, SHRM membership.

Q. How do we overcome the perception that growth could be impeded if a chapter transitioned from a non-100% chapter to a 100% chapter?
A. We have provided examples in this toolkit of chapters where impeded growth was an initial concern but where it did not become reality.

Q. How do I show my boss the value in belonging to SHRM?  Not everyone gets their SHRM dues paid by company, which are sometimes more expensive than local chapter dues.

Q. Our board is afraid of losing members (which make up a high percentage of our membership) who are not HR professionals and reduce our revenues significantly.  How do I address that concern?
A. SHRM membership is inclusive and even those individuals with part-time HR responsibilities can join. HR Service providers are also able to join SHRM and their willingness to do so and participate in the HR profession signifies that they may be a more qualified service provider for your chapter.

Q.  Is it acceptable to have additional member categories that would allow limited access to chapter member benefits to non-SHRM members?
A.  All members of a 100% chapter must also be members of SHRM.  It is not acceptable to have categories that would permit non-SHRM members to be members of the chapter.  Please refer to the Tools, Resources and Ideas section for ways to attract non-SHRM members.
