Talent Development as a Key Business Strategy:
Filling the Leadership Pipeline at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center

Workplace Application: This session illustrates the value of talent development as a key business strategy and offers a best practice model for implementing a full-scope talent development system.

Talent development is a systematic and strategic approach to identifying and preparing high-potential leaders for future roles within an organization. It is employed as both a retention and development tool in order to insure a strong leadership pipeline. The session will address how Gunderson Lutheran Medical identified the need for a talent development program and how they created a system that has garnered national recognition by the Healthcare Advisory Board.

Presenter: Nancy Noelke, M.S., B.A., consultant for talent development, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

Good Fortune: How Corporate Social Responsibility Can Save the World
Workplace Application: HR leaders should take the lead in making CSR personal for every employee and strategic for senior leaders.

CSR is becoming a major CEO-level concern. Senior line executives' most pressing need is to incorporate CSR into both the fabric of their culture and innovative growth strategies. You are the "natural" internal leaders in linking CSR from strategic concepts to individual engagement of employers and stakeholders. According to a recent Cone Marketing survey, a majority of employees want to work for companies directly contributing to social and environmental benefit. Companies that don't actively address this powerful trend with specific employee programs that increase innovation, morale, retention and recruiting results are already losing the "war for talent."

Presenter: Will Marre, CEO & Founder, American Dream Project/CitizenOne, Encinitas, Calif.

Emotional Intelligence: A Way to Accelerate Leadership
Workplace Application: In this session, you will be given a mini-EI self assessment, major research on the correlation between emotional intelligence and leadership development, and an opportunity to build your capability in at least one of the EI areas.

Emotional intelligence (EQ/EI) is defined as adeptness at managing ourselves and our interactions with others. Ample research identifies EI as a difference that makes a positive difference, both for the organization and for the individual. And, extensive research shows that lack of EI has a cost to both. While IQ is fixed, EQ/EI can be learned, so we don't have to settle for poor EI. With organizations needing leadership today more than ever before, developing greater emotional intelligence (EI) is paramount.

Presenter: Sandy Mobley, executive development practice leader and master coach, The Learning Advantage, Inc., Arlington, Va.

The Differentiated Workforce: Transforming Talent into Strategic Impact
Workplace Application: Attend this session and learn more about deciding when, where, and how to invest in the workforce.

Given the financial and managerial resources needed to attract, select, develop, and retain high performers, companies simply can't afford to have "A" players in all positions. All too often, companies invest in their best and worst employees in equal measure. The result is often the departure of "A" players, discouraged by their treatment, and the retention of "C" players. This session will show how a "Differentiated Workforce" can help create those strategic capabilities which drive strategy execution and business success. Mark Huselid will demonstrate how to develop a Strategic Human Capital Plan that details the specific steps needed to place "A" players in "A" positions, effectively manage "B" and "C" players and positions, and execute and communicate the process throughout the business.

Presenter: Mark Huselid, Ph.D., professor of HR Strategy, School of Management and Labor Relations, Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.

Outthink the Competition
Workplace Application: This session is an engaging, hands-on program designed to leave you able to consistently outthink your competition.

Kaihan Krippendorff has studied corporate conflict for more than a decade. His work shows that creativity and flexibility are more important than money or size. He has found that companies do not beat their competition by outspending but win by outthinking them. History's greatest military strategists—from Sun Tzu to Napoleon Bonaparte—shared an ability to conceive "winning moves" that their adversaries did not see or would not choose. Similarly, the companies that have created the greatest value in the last decade—from Wal-Mart to Dell Computers—made creative strategic moves that competitors viewed as illogical.

Presenter: Kaihan Krippendorff, president, Strategy Learning Center, Miami Beach, Fla.

Executive Derailment
Workplace Application: This session will delve into ways to identify and prevent executive derailment and the reasons that turnover in the C-suite is at it highest in recent years.

Turnover research indicates that C-suite tenure is shorter than ever. Demographic research indicates young people are getting bigger jobs sooner than ever and that they aren't prepared for them. As a result, they are "derailing" or failing in first-time general management jobs faster than ever before, which creates a succession, feedback and development dilemma. Competencies predict success; learning agility predicts potential; and derailment factors (negative competencies) predict failure. Cara Capretta will share the common reasons for failure and 19 specific stallers/stoppers associated with derailment. She will also share a few case studies of real life executives who have demonstrated derailing factors.

Presenter: Cara Capretta, vice president of Strategy & Intellectual Property, Korn/Ferry International, Minneapolis, Minn.
