SHRM Submits Comments on the Use of Social Security Numbers

On September 4, 2007, SHRM submitted comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on the private sector's use of Social Security Numbers (SSNs). The Commission requested public comment on the use of SSNs in order to address identity theft awareness, prevention, and detection.

SHRM explained how HR professionals use an employee's SSN in today's workplaces for hiring, payroll, and benefits procedures, as well as the safeguards they follow in protecting an employee's SSN and other confidential information from identity theft.
