This year, SHRM’s Human Capital Leadership Award will focus on one outstanding HR leader. Instead of four different award categories, as was our practice in the past, the 2009 Human Capital Leadership Award will spotlight “The HR Leader of the Year”. In addition, two finalists (or runners-up) will be named.
We have made this change for 2009 for two reasons:
- First, during the past two years, many of the nominations submitted by organizations described achievements that could qualify for more than one category; in practice, nominees found it difficult to compartmentalize their work by “business leader”, “strategic”, “innovative”, or “competitive.” As a result, many found the categories to be a hindrance.
- Second, we felt these extraordinary times call for showcasing extraordinary individuals. The intention is to celebrate HR professionals who have demonstrated vision, courage and innovation in leading through – and solving – the most pressing workplace challenges in today’s tough economy. In this way, we hope this year’s winner and runners-up will serve as inspirations for HR leaders everywhere.
