Wisconsin Legislature Votes to Protect Safety, Security of Workers

SHRM Applauds Legislature for Upholding Governor’s Veto

(Alexandria, Va., February 2, 2006)—The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today applauded the Wisconsin state legislature for upholding the Governor’s veto and allowing employers to continue setting policies prohibiting weapons on company property.

The legislation would have amended the Wisconsin Concealed Weapons Law. According to SHRM, the bill would have created unreasonable notification requirements for employers to prevent weapons from being brought into the workplace. In addition, it would have prohibited employers from establishing policies that prevented employees and patrons from carrying and storing firearms in their vehicles while on company property or when using the vehicle during work hours.

SHRM and its Wisconsin members argued that the bill would have jeopardized employee safety and organizational efforts to maintain safe working environments. The Society’s research indicates that the majority of employees say that feeling safe in the work place is very important to their overall job satisfaction. Additional research released this year by the American Journal of Public Health found that workplaces where guns were permitted were five times more likely to experience a homicide than those where all weapons were prohibited.

SHRM is currently working with its members to oppose similar legislation in several states across the country.
