A Roof Over Their Heads

In areas where affordable satisfactory housing has become a serious quality of life issue, some companies are banding together with civic and community leaders to form housing trusts. The groups meet to discuss best practices, lobby government officials and convince developers to build affordable housing.

"If we don't get a handle on the housing crisis, this is going to be detrimental to the economic vitality of our community," says Chris Block, executive director of the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, Calif. (, which has raised $17 million for housing assistance in the San Francisco area. "One of our goals is to play an active role to make sure affordable housing gets built."

"The first step is to mobilize the corporate community to come together and address quality of life issues," says Michelle Montague-Bruno, communications director for the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group (, a nonprofit trade association in the San Francisco area.
