Which language should you teach your employees? That depends on where you are, whom you hire and whom you serve-and your needs may be changing.

For example, the Hispanic population in Tennessee increased 90 percent from 1990 to 1998, according to the 2000 Census Bureau estimate. "Our demand has been for Spanish," says Patricia Gardner, manager of the Business and Community Development Center for Chattanooga State Technical Community College (CSTCC) in Chattanooga, Tenn. "In the South, we hadn't had any real diverse cultural changes until [recently]. There has been an explosion."

On the other hand, San Diego has long had large Spanish-speaking Hispanic populations and Tagalog-speaking Filipino populations, and in Dearborn, Mich., there is a large Middle Eastern population speaking Arabic, Farsi and other Middle Eastern languages.
