DOL Urges Companies to ‘Make It in America’

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced a national competition to awards funds to winning businesses that create jobs and invest in America.

Details were scarce in the Sept. 25, 2012, announcement and more information is expected to be released in early 2013, but about 15 winners of the “Make It in America Challenge” are expected to receive a piece of the $40 million initiative, according to the DOL.

DOL officials said it was particularly interested in businesses that use innovative worker training.

“The modern global manufacturing landscape has changed the way companies do business, but it also has changed the way companies do training,” Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said in a news release.

“This initiative will provide comprehensive assistance to those companies and those communities committed to ‘make it in America’ through innovative training programs that lead to industry-recognized credentials and arm our workforce with the skills employers want to see from day one,” she said.

To be eligible, projects must:

  • Encourage insourcing through onshoring of productive activity by U.S. firms.
  • Foster increased foreign direct investment or incentivize U.S. companies to keep their businesses and jobs in the U.S.
  • Train local workers to meet the needs of those businesses.

Funding for the awards is coming from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership and the DOL’s Employment and Training Administration.

Detailed guidelines for application, and the deadline, are to be published by early 2013, the DOL said.
