Executive Education Summit Descriptions
Managing Human Capital in the High Performance Organization

A Harvard Business Publishing Event

Now more than ever, talent is the key differentiator that leads to sustained high performance. But challenges abound for leading global companies in attracting, deploying, developing, and retaining human capital for maximum impact.

Using the case method we will explore these challenges as well as practical, actionable steps to meet them. We will help participants develop a solid framework for managing "star" workers and understanding how a firm can be systematic in achieving a sustainable competitive advantage by leveraging its employees. We also explore lessons from standout professional service firms that can be applied across a wide range of organizations.

In this interactive program participants will work with two of the most well-respected Harvard Business School faculty working in the area of human capital: Thomas DeLong and Boris Groysberg.

Thomas J. DeLong is the Philip J. Stomberg Professor of Management Practice in the Organizational Behavior area at the Harvard Business School. Before joining the Harvard Faculty, DeLong was Chief Development Officer and Managing Director of Morgan Stanley Group, Inc., where he was responsible for the firm's human capital and focused on issues of organizational strategy regarding people, organizational change and globalization.

At Harvard, Professor DeLong teaches MBA and executive courses focused on managing human capital, organizational behavior and managing talent in professional service firms. Most recently, DeLong has been responsible for the first-year required curriculum for the MBA program and now serves as course head for the required course on Leadership and Organizational Behavior.

Boris Groysberg is an Assistant Professor in the Organizational Behavior unit at the Harvard Business School. He currently teaches the Managing Human Capital course in the second year elective course of the MBA program and in several Executive Education programs.

In a number of papers, he examines how firms develop, hire, retain, and utilize star knowledge workers. By focusing on the performance of these highly skilled professionals, his research contributes to the human capital theory, the theory of allocation of talent, the theory of labor market competition, and human research management studies. Groysberg has won, for two consecutive years, the Strategic Management Society PhD Fellowship (Booz Allen Hamilton/SMS fellow) for his research on talent management. In 2001, he was also named runner up for the Best Conference Paper Prize.
