ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The overall objectives are to familiarize HR managers and executives with the concepts and decisions involved in developing an effective employment brand, and retaining employees through employee engagement and embeddedness. More specifically, the objectives of the course are:

  • To provide course participants with an overview of how to identify and create the elements of an effective employment brand
  • To identify the choices involved in matching recruitment advertising and recruiting channels to the organization's employment brand
  • To identify different strategic options organizations can follow to retain employees including employee engagement and employee embeddedness

1. Review of the concept of brand equity and employment brands
a. What is brand equity
b. What is an employment brand
c. What are examples of successful employment brands
d. How do I identify the employment brand of my organization

2. Review of the best practices for communicating an employment brand
a. Development of the employment brand message
b. Identification of the alternative channels for communicating
c. How to choose optimal communication channel

3. Employee engagement and retention
a. What is employee engagement
b. Identification of how employee engagement affects retention
c. The role of HR and leadership in creating employee engagement

4. Employee embeddedness and retention
a. What is employee embeddedness
b. Shaping a system of HR practices to create employee embeddedness

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Christopher J. Collins, Ph.D.
Cornell University

Christopher J. Collins, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Human Resource Management in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. He earned his Ph.D. in human resources and organizational behavior from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. His research interests include strategic human resource management, firm innovation and knowledge creation, employee recruitment, and employment brand equity.

Dr. Collins’ research has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Performance, Human Resource Management Review and the Academy of Management
