The Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-3 (SASSI-3) is a brief and easy to use screening measure that helps to identify individuals who have a high probability of having a substance use disorder. Since the SASSI-3 is comprised of both obvious and subtle items, it is particularly useful in identifying persons who are experiencing difficulties with substance abuse but are unwilling or unable to acknowledge them. Now in its third edition, the SASSI-3 has been extensively researched and revised. The SASSI-3 takes less than 15 minutes to complete and is comprised of 67 true-false items in addition to a 26 item self-report section on substance use.

The SASSI-3 is designed exclusively as a tool for clinical assessment and treatment. Use of this instrument outside this context, such as for pre-employment screening, is not appropriate.

What the SASSI Measures

The SASSI-3 is comprised of 10 scales which measure the following dimensions:

  • Face Valid Alcohol (FVA)
  • Face Valid Other Drugs (FVOD)
  • Symptoms (SYM)
  • Obvious Attributes (OAT)
  • Subtle Attributes (SAT)
  • Defensiveness (DEF)
  • Supplemental Addiction Measure (SAM)
  • Family vs. Control Measure (FAM)
  • Correctional (COR)
  •  Random Answering

Based upon the configuration of scales, decision rules are used to measure the degree to which the individual’s response patterns are similar to persons with substance dependence problems.

SASSI Report

The SASSI-3 Report is comprised of the following:

  • Assessment Overview
  • Graphic Presentation of Results
  • Decision Rule Classification
  • Brief Interpretation
