Joining a student chapter is not required and students who do not want to join a chapter can indicate the at-large chapter number of “5000” on the application. If you wish to join a chapter, you can reach out the advisor at your school using the Student Chapter Directory. If there is no chapter at your school, you can reach out to the advisor at a nearby school to ask about joining their chapter or you can start your own chapter

In addition to the student member benefits, joining a student chapter provides you with added resources and benefits, including:
Networking opportunities with fellow HR students and HR professionals
HR guidance from chapter advisors
Participating in Case Competition for practice solving real-life HR situations
Holding a chapter leadership role
Participating in the chapter Merit Award program, which recognizes student chapters that have achieved excellence in operations and programming for members
Attending chapter meetings (such as resume and career workshops and networking events with professional chapters)
Achieving recognization for being a part of the world's largest HR Association

There are no fees for joining a student chapter, although chapters may collect additional dues.

Students who are joining a newly affiliating chapter may join as an at-large member before the chartering process is complete. Chapters will need to keep a list of these students and submit a list to SHRM Student Programs.

For information on joining a Virtual Student Chapter, please see our Virtual Student Chapter FAQs page. Please see our Directory of Virtual Chapters to find a chapter.
