Despite the old adage of “it’s better to give than to receive,” most studies on employee recognition have focused solely on how recognition experiences affect those who receive the accolades. In a landmark new study, the O.C. Tanner Institute has done a deep dive into how giving employee recognition, praise or a simple thank you contributes to a high-performing culture.

In study after study, we’ve learned that receiving recognition causes an increase in tenure, work output, engagement and innovation. However, this study reveals what happens on the giving end of that equation. And it’s enlightening.

About the Presenters: Gary Beckstrand is vice president of the O.C. Tanner Institute. With more than 27 years of research, marketing and business development experience, Beckstrand has consulted with numerous Fortune 100 companies to assess recognition cultures, develop strategic solutions, and measure results. Prior to joining O.C. Tanner, he managed many well-known brands for global organizations, including Frito-Lay, Kellogg’s and Franklin Covey.

Jordan Rogers is a senior analyst at the O.C. Tanner Institute. He researches how appreciation affects employees across the globe, and what companies can do to ensure their employees are producers of great work. Rogers has extensive experience in data analysis and survey research from his previous job in which he consulted for major political campaigns across the United States.
