Q: How do I determine if an educational or training activity is eligible for SHRM recertification credit?

A: There are three main criteria to determine if an educational or training activity is eligible for professional development credits (PDCs). It must provide:

  • Formal and structured learning.
  • Content aligned to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge.
  • A minimum of one hour of instruction, which does not include time spent on noneducational activities (welcomes, introductions, breaks, meals, exhibits, networking, etc.).

Q: I understand a minimum of one hour is required for a continuing education activity to qualify for PDC credit, but the program I participated in lasted one hour and 15 minutes. How many PDCs can I enter?

A: Under the Advance Your Education category, PDCs for continuing education are calculated in 15-minute increments, once the one-hour minimum has been achieved. Each 15-minute interval is 0.25, or a quarter, of one hour. So, in this case, you will have earned 1.25 PDCs. Please note that increments above 15 minutes are rounded down to the nearest interval. For example, if you participated in a session that lasted one hour and 20 minutes, you would still earn 1.25 PDCs.

Q: Are Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) accepted?

A: Yes. SHRM accepts 1 PDC for each CLE credit awarded. SHRM accepts 10 PDCs for each accredited CEU awarded. (Per International Association for Continuing Education and Training guidelines, 1 CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of classroom time.)
