About 43 percent of U.S. households in 2016 did not earn enough salary for basic life necessities, according to The United Way's ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Project.

The ALICE Project calculated these thresholds based on what it perceived to be the bare-minimum income needed, based on the cost of living in each area.
