​The authors of the DDI study offered these tips to HR staffs for using analytics to anticipate business needs and communicate better with company leaders:

  • Be sure your analytics approach is addressing overall business issues, not just HR issues. “Analytics that fail to start with business (not just HR) questions will be challenging to execute and, often, wholly unpersuasive to stakeholders.”
  • Hire and groom people not just for their abilities in data science, but also for their business acumen, visualization and ethics.
  • Build skills in visualization and storytelling. “These are powerful ways to communicate data; such messages are more memorable and persuasive than numbers or text.”
  • Recognize that the purpose of analytics is to create change. “Numbers mean nothing if they don’t drive action; pair analytics with interactive data to build engagement about a practical path forward.”

The use of analytics is especially important to guarantee diversity in an organization, according to the DDI report.

“Analytics also exemplify objectivity and fairness. Companies strong in people analytics have more gender diversity in leadership,” said Evan Sinar, chief scientist at DDI.
