States reported that 185,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Apr. 9, pointing to a labor market still short on surplus workers. New jobless claims have returned to pre-pandemic levels since the end of 2021 and were reported at the lowest level since 1968 last week. Claims had topped 645,000 one year ago.

The total number of workers continuing to claim unemployment benefits—1.47 million—is also well below its pre-pandemic average of 1.7 million.
