States reported that 184,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Apr. 16, reflecting an extremely tight labor market. New jobless claims have returned to pre-pandemic levels since the end of 2021 and have recently hovered around 50-year lows. Claims had been near 600,000 one year ago.
