7-Eleven Workplace Raids Signal New Front in Immigration Enforcement

​Federal immigration agents targeted about a hundred 7-Eleven stores across the country Jan. 10 in the largest workplace enforcement operation under President Donald Trump.

Twenty-one people were arrested and the businesses will be required to produce I-9 forms for all employees in order to prove work authorization.

Sending a Message

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said employers better get used to a new normal. "This is what we're gearing up for this year, and what you're going to see more and more of is these large-scale compliance inspections, just for starters," an agency spokesman said. "It's not going to be limited to large companies or any particular industry, big medium and small. It's going to be inclusive of everything that we see out there."

Repeat Violator

The operation reportedly arose from a 2013 investigation that resulted in charges against nine 7-Eleven franchisees and managers in New York and Virginia. In those cases, managers used more than 25 stolen identities to employ at least 115 people in the country illegally.

Neither 7-Eleven nor its parent company, Seven & I Holding Co. based in Tokyo, was charged in that case. Julie Myers Wood, former head of ICE during the Bush administration, said Wednesday's action was an example of immigration officials focusing enforcement efforts on a repeat violator.
