Ask an Advisor

Are you having trouble finding the answers to your questions? An HR Advisor is here to help. Simply email, chat, or call our helpline and a SHRM Advisor will respond to your HR-related questions.

Note: Eligible members have up to 15 personalized requests with the HR Knowledge Advisor service per 12-month membership period. Access to Express Requests is unlimited and does not count towards this maximum.

SHRM memberships are individual memberships and cannot be shared. We may only speak with or send information to the person holding the SHRM membership.

By Phone

Our staff of experienced, certified HR professionals is ready to respond to your HR-related questions Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET.

Contact us by phone at 1-800-283-SHRM – select option 5. You must have your SHRM member ID readily available, as you will be prompted to enter it by the phone system.

Ask your HR-related question using the "Chat Live" button below Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.

By Email

Our email form is available from 5pm ET to 8:30am ET Monday through Friday, and all day on weekends and holidays. Depending on the volume and complexity of member requests, a full response to your question may take more than 1-2 business days. Please plan ahead when possible and if your need is urgent, contact us by phone.

If you send an e-mail request and do not receive an automatic e-mail response acknowledging your request, please check to see if your spam blocker is activated.

If you have received a response to your request and need further clarification on the issue, we ask that you contact the HR Knowledge Advisor who responded to your original request for follow-up.


SHRM’s HR Knowledge Advisors are not attorneys and they cannot provide legal advice. While they can generally discuss employment laws and regulations, they cannot and will not advise callers on application of the law to the caller’s particular facts. They provide general information which is not a substitute for legal advice.

Due to federal regulations, HR Knowledge Advisors are not able to provide services to members from foreign countries with which the U.S. has trade sanctions in place. These countries include Crimea region of Ukraine, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.
