Michelle Bottomley is a marketing and sales change leader who helps companies transform their businesses and grow sales and profits through branding, customer analytics and digital engagement.  She has partnered with chief executive officers, executive teams and Boards of Directors to drive ambitious growth agendas in diverse career roles, including as corporate chief marketing officer, e-commerce business leader and marketing communications agency principal. As a customer-centric marketer, Michelle brings a deep understanding of customer motivation and behavior across financial services, retail, travel, professional services, publishing, packaged goods, automotive and other industries.   She is a member of the Board of Directors at Bose Corporation and the Society for Human Resource Management and a Governance Fellow at the National Association of Corporate Directors.  She is a past member of the Board at Barclays' Bank of Delaware.

In July 2018, Michelle was recruited to the role of Chief Marketing Officer at New York Life, where she leads marketing vision, strategy and integration of marketing, sales and service to deliver a cohesive customer experience, grow customer relationships and build the brand for the $42B mutual insurance company. Before that (2017-2018), she was Chief Marketing Officer at Staples, the multibillion-dollar market leading B2B distributor and retailer of workplace products, services and solutions. At Staples, she transformed the marketing function from a product/promotion model to one focused on brand differentiation and customer demand generation. She also developed integrated marketing programs and upgraded analytics, creative and marketing operations to deliver AI-powered omni-channel communications.  Staples was acquired by the private equity firm Sycamore Partners in 2017.

From 2013-2016, Michelle was Chief Marketing and Sales Officer at Mercer, the world's largest Human Capital consultancy.  In this role she generated $1.2B in new client revenue growth per year, grew Mercer's share of voice in external media to #1 from #3, and contributed to $400M in digital business revenue with a new digital vision and strategy.  Before that (2012-2014), she led the $10M e-commerce business for Zinio, LLC, the world's largest digital newsstand offering 5,500+ titles in 200+ countries.  In this role she reversed 12 years of negative operating margin and generated new growth from digital magazine content.    

Michelle was Chief Marketing Officer at Barclaycard from 2008-2011, where she led the marketing function for a $6B business, oversaw a $375M marketing budget and delivered a 5:1 ROI.  She launched the Barclaycard brand in the U.S., increased digital engagement from 25% to 45% and grew loyalty and and insurance business from $10M to $25M per year.  Before that, Michelle advanced from 1998-2008 to become President then Chief Operating Officer at Ogilvy & Mather New York, where she led double-digit growth via new business development and client consulting with brand name companies including American Express, Sears, Unilever, Kraft, United Airlines, Ford Motor Company, Six Flags, IBM and many others.  Earlier in her career she held marketing positions at Epsilon and Digitas. She started her career as a corporate analyst at Liberty Mutual Insurance Group.

As an industry innovator, Michelle has been honored with numerous prestigious recognitions, including being named to the "Marketing 50" by World 50, the "Marketing Hall of Femme" by Direct Marketing News, one of the industry's "Women to Watch" by AdAge, and "Working Mother of the Year" by Advertising Women of New York, to name a few.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Northeastern University in Boston and took courses toward a PhD in Economics at Boston University. Michelle lives in Princeton, New Jersey with her family.
