The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) officially opened its representative office in Beijing, China on May 29, 2007, said Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, SHRM’s president and CEO. Through the official entry into China, SHRM is working to increase awareness of SHRM and our products and services, while communicating our message as effectively as possible, Meisinger added.
The opening of SHRM’s China office was officially announced at a news conference that was attended by J. Robert Carr, chief professional and business development officer; Brian Glade, vice president of international programs, both traveling from SHRM’s headquarters in Alexandria, Va.; and Patrick Ran, director of business development for the China office. The China office is focused on providing HR educational strategies as the country moves toward becoming a global economic powerhouse, Glade said.
To provide educational products to Chinese HR professionals, SHRM has entered into a partnership with the Hay Group—a global management consultancy with significant operations in China—for that company to provide the professional development courses.
SHRM’s objective in China is to release the potential for human resource management, to elevate the profession, to educate, and likewise to learn what is happening in the HR profession in China so we can educate our domestic members, Glade said.
The educational programs that SHRM is offering include a China HR Generalist Program, Glade said. To create the program, SHRM used the platform of the Essentials for Human Resource Management program, which is an introductory course offering a comprehensive review of HR roles and responsibilities.
A team of subject matter experts removed the U.S. content and inserted the relevant Chinese content, and a junior- to mid-level program on the basics of HR management was created, Glade said. The China HR Generalist program was then reviewed by HR practitioners and academics in China before being translated into Chinese. It covers employee relations and regulations, he said.
The other leading function of SHRM’s China office is to support the global HR professional, Glade said. As the Chinese economy globalizes rapidly, leaders of Chinese companies will recognize that, even though the China market is big, they eventually will have to expand to markets outside China, he said.
Multinational companies based in China will invest around the world, and their HR practitioners will need to understand the global environment. To help them, SHRM created the Global Learning System, which is preparatory material to support those practitioners who seek to obtain the Global Professional in HR (GPHR) certification from the SHRM-affiliated Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).
