April 30 is the deadline for the 2014 HRM Impact Award, which honors organizations from the profit, nonprofit and government sectors with successful, evidence-based HR management practices.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the SHRM Foundation, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and the SIOP Foundation are sponsors of the award.
Winners will be selected based on their HR practices and initiatives that have been measured and deemed successful through evidence-based, data-driven analyses. They will receive a plaque and media exposure highlighting their winning practices or initiatives.
A panel of volunteer judges, including academics and HR practitioners from the four sponsoring organizations, will review submissions on the following criteria:
*Financial or operational impact on the business or enterprise.
*Impact on employees and teams.
*Scientific impact on the research and practices of HR, industrial-organizational psychology and/or management.
*Quality of evidence that supports the financial, people and scientific impacts.

The public nonprofit recipients were:
*Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF),U.S. Department of Justice, for creating a cost-effective way to evaluate an employee’s competencies for promotion to a supervisory special agent position. The ATF worked with the Human Resources Research Organization (HRRO), which, along with ClicFlic Intelligent Media, developed an interactive online simulation called the Electronic Promotion Assessment System.
*North Shore-LIJ Health System, for its Transforming Culture through Evidence and Innovation program. The program implemented TeamSTEPPS, an evidence-based framework developed by the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality and the Department of Defense. With the additional use of Collaborative Care Councils, North Shore-LIJ created a sustainable culture of safety and a standard of excellence in health care.
Private for-profit recipients were:
*PepsiCo/Frito-Lay, for its performance pay program that determines compensation based on meeting sales growth targets. The company partnered with the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California to evaluate the program to ensure it would have the intended impact before rolling it out in 2013.
*Procter & Gamble (P&G), which developed its Global Adaptive Reasoning Test, a cognitive assessment used at the beginning of its hiring process. P&G partnered with the HRRO to ensure that questions accurately measured cognitive ability, and with Development Dimensions International to develop adaptive delivery to ensure that online test-taking is secure.
Any for-profit, nonprofit or government organization may compete for the HRM Impact Award. Consulting firms are encouraged to have their clients submit an application that highlights a practice developed by the consulting firm and used in the client organization.
