Named after former SHRM President and CEO Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, the fellowship assists HR professionals who have demonstrated leadership in human resources, significant HR work experience, community involvement and undergraduate achievement. The fellowship is endowed by SHRM, the HR Certification Institute and the SHRM Foundation.
SHRM announced the winner during its 2010 Leadership Conference held Nov. 18-20 in Arlington, Va.
“The Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship winner should be someone with a combination of HR work experience and a desire to develop into a true leader. Margaret Linnehan fits the role perfectly,” said Henry G. “Hank” Jackson, SHRM's president and CEO.
Linnehan is studying for a master’s degree in organizational dynamics at the University of Pennsylvania while working as a human resource specialist at the Simkar Corp. in Philadelphia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Gwynedd-Mercy College. Her HR experience includes roles at Johnson & Johnson and Blommer Chocolate. She lives in Cherry Hill, N.J.
"Being awarded the Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship is one of the most exciting moments of my life,” said Linnehan. “I feel honored to be chosen and excited over all the opportunity that this award represents."
In her application, Linnehan noted that she had received her bachelor’s degree “by attending class part-time [in the] evenings while working full-time and raising two children” and that she is currently taking only one class a year in the master’s program because of financial difficulties.
To qualify for the Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship, an HR professional must:
Each year at least one new fellowship totaling a maximum of $10,000 is awarded to a first-time master’s degree student working toward a degree in human resources. Each fellowship may be renewed for one year, for a total of two years and a maximum of $20,000.
