Mary K. Otto, SHRM-SCP, pictured on the left, is the recipient of the 2015 Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship for Graduate Study in HR. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Foundation announced the winner Nov. 20, 2015, at SHRM’s Volunteer Leaders’ Summit in Washington, D.C.
The fellowship is named in honor of Meisinger, J.D., who served as SHRM’s president and CEO from March 2002 until her retirement in July 2008. It is designed to support master’s degree students who are SHRM members or nonmembers who are certified HR professionals.
“A goal of the fellowship is to identify people with potential for achieving a senior-level position in HR and to support their master’s level studies as they follow that path,” said Elissa O’Brien, SHRM-SCP, SHRM’s vice president of membership, during the summit Friday morning.
Otto is manager of human resources for TouchTunes Music Corp. in Schaumburg, Ill., and works as an independent consultant. Her previous positions include serving as HR manager, North America, for Viscosity Oil Company/Petronas Lubricants International; senior HR business partner at LTD Commodities; and executive team lead, HR, at Target.
She has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maryland. She will begin her graduate studies at Lasell College in Auburndale, Mass., working toward a master’s degree in management with a concentration in HR management.
She said she intends to focus her continuing education on employment law and its practical application.
Award recipients receive up to $10,000 annually. Fellowships are renewable for one additional year.
