Presented by the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA), the award was established in the mid-1980s in memory of Georges Petitpas, who contributed significantly to the development and activities of the WFPMA and died shortly after his nomination to the WFPMA presidency in 1983.
The award is presented at the WFPMA World Congress every two years.

In 2008, the award went to personnel practitioner, lawyer, academic and author Carlos Aldao Zapiola from Argentina. In 2006, the award went to former WFPMA President Michael Losey, a longtime president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management.
